BreakOUT! is proud to announce the receipt of 4 national and local awards in just 3 months!

In October, BreakOUT! received the Justice for Youth Award by the Juvenile Justice Project of Louisiana at their 15th Anniversary Gala.  This was awarded to BreakOUT! “in recognition of the leadership that BreakOUT! has demonstrated in fighting the criminalization of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth in Louisiana.”  We were honored to receive the award alongside Juvenile Regional Services, Senator Karen Carter Peterson, Stand Up for Each Other!, Marsha Levick, and attorneys from the Loyola University New Orleans College of Law.

In early November, BreakOUT! received the Out in the Silence Award for Youth Activism by the PBS Documentary of the same name.  This award was created to “encourage, highlight and honor creative and courageous young people and their work to call attention to bullying, harassment, bigotry and discrimination and to promote safe schools and inclusive communities for all,” and came with a $1,000 honorarium.

In late November, BreakOUT! was excited to receive the Hell Yes! Grant Award from Resist, Inc.  The Hell Yes! Award honors the “moral clarity, courage and political commitment of its founders” and recognizes “inspiring, radical activism that cuts to the heart of RESIST’s mission to challenge illegitimate authority.”

And in December, BreakOUT! received the Malala Youth Leadership Award from the Social Change Film Festival and Institute for our work to develop our “We Deserve Better” video about discriminatory policing practices in New Orleans.

We shared the stage with filmmakers FosterBear Films to receive the award at Tipitina’s.  Other awardees included Kids ReThink New Orleans Schools and 2-Cent Entertainment.

These awards will hang next to our 2012 Freedom Fighters Social Justice Award from Freedom Fellowship Ministries awarded in March of this year- perhaps the most important award we have received as it came directly from our local community.

BreakOUT! is both honored and humbled to have received such recognition in the community on the local and national level.  The awards will be placed in our space, where members can be reminded of their accomplishments.

Many thanks to all of you who have honored BreakOUT! – we couldn’t do it without your support!
